Push this car hard through a turn and you’ll feel safe knowing where the wheels are going. The car is a beast but unlike your average sports car, it’s a beast with manners. And should you get yourself in trouble, you can mash on the brakes and those massive rotors will get you out of it.

Instead of just raw power, the people at BMW decided to add precision, feedback and response. Approximately 80 percent of the parts in the new M3 are new. Highlights include a carbon fiber roof (a first for a production car), a suspension largely constructed of aluminum, and an aluminum hood/plastic front fenders.

The engine is a V-8 that weighs 33 pounds less than the previous generation’s straight six. It’s also a much higher revving engine. The experience is somewhat similar to the VTEC Honda sports coupe but with a lot more oomph.

The power-plant is constructed from aluminum silicon. In using this method, heavy steel liners can be discarded. The crankshaft weighs in at a feathery 44 pounds. Peak power comes once you hit the 8,000+ RPM range. The designers claim that a high revving engine makes for better control of the rear wheels.

Like its bigger sibling, the M3 can be tuned by the driver. The throttle sensitivity, shock rates, and stability control can be modified from the dashboard.

During a casual test, I found the normal mode to provide the best lap times. Control was neutral and easy to manage even during tight situations. The steering felt a bit disconnected at times. That’s due to a bit of electronic over engineering on the engineers part and the thick design of the steering wheel. There was also a tendency for a bit of understeer when the car was pushed to its limits on during private track time.

During extended testing, the brakes had a tendency to fade even when competition grade pads were installed. The manual transmission felt precise but the shift throws were a bit longer than I’d like.

In everyday use, the new M3 offers practicality. The M3 has great everyday road manners and the trunk space is plenty adequate. An energy recovery system is used to help power the electrics. The power comes from the energy released during braking.

This machine has evolved into something that’s approaching the performance of a 911 class car. It might look mild mannered but it delivers world class results. If you want a car that truly challenges your race driving skills, this is not the car for you. This is the kind of car that gives controlled feedback to the driver and even makes less skilled drivers look good.

But if I had to split hairs, this car doesn’t have the overall refinement of a true 911. The performance numbers are great but the overall driver feedback can feel a bit dead at times. People used to driving a Honda Accord will love this. More experienced drivers will expect a more tactile experience.

Thirty years ago the inventory of BMW parts didn’t include the oxygen sensor. Originally invented as part of the effort to reduce auto emissions, these sensors also affect your engine’s performance by helping to assure an ideal fuel/air mixture.

How the Oxygen Sensor Works

Your BMW probably has two oxygen sensors, but might have as few as one or as many as four. These BMW parts operate together to give the onboard computer a clear indication of the composition of the exhaust.

As the exhaust flows over these sensors, they send voltage to the computer. If the oxygen content is high, then the voltage drops. The computer ‘knows’ that the mixture is lean, so it sends more gas to the engine. If the oxygen content is low, the voltage rises and that means the mixture is too rich. The computer will cut back on fuel flow to correct the problem.

Even when driving a steady speed, the fuel/air mixture will fluctuate as conditions change. When accelerating or decelerating, the mixture changes rapidly. The computer must be able to respond quickly so that the engine runs at peak efficiency and auto emissions are kept to a minimum.

The Problem With Aging Sensors

Like other BMW parts, oxygen sensors don’t work as well as they age. The sensor eventually becomes coated with soot and residue from the engine exhaust. This has two effects.

First, the sensor becomes sluggish. It can’t react to changes as quickly and it has trouble “seeing” the air through the buildup. That means the computer isn’t notified as quickly and fuel flow doesn’t change like it should.

Second, even when the sensor does respond, the buildup causes it to see less air than actually exists and therefore reports a lean mixture. This causes the computer to send more fuel to the engine than needed. This not only wastes gas but also causes the car to belch out more harmful emissions.

Over time, the rich fuel mixture will put strain on the catalytic converter. It has to work harder to knock out the contaminants and as it works it heats up. The converter can actually become hot enough to melt the catalyst, causing a blockage in the exhaust and an expensive repair bill.

When Should The Sensor Be Replaced?

Most people learn their oxygen sensor is bad when they fail their emissions test. If you live in an area without emissions tests, you may not find out until serious damage has been done.

These BMW parts should be replaced as part of routine maintenance. The schedule ranges anywhere from every 30,000 miles for the oldest technologies to 100,000 miles for the most current. Check your manual or talk to your mechanic.

A car with a bad oxygen sensor can burn 10-15% more gas than normal and that adds up. The cost of replacement will be made up in no time by your increased fuel efficiency.

factory had been destroyed by allied bombing, they were on the point of
extinction yet BMW rose to be one of the finest motorcycle manufacturers in the
world.

It was the Treaty of Versailles that changed the face of BMW. Up until the end of World War 1, BMW was a manufacturer of aircraft engines. Its famous blue and white circular badge, which is said to represent aircraft propellers in motion, being a reminder of the company’s past. The fact that the logo actually derives from the colours of the flag of Bavaria, and was used a good 12 years before BMW began to build aircraft engines, has done nothing to interfere with the popular myth.

When the German Air Force was disbanded and outlawed after the war, BMW had to turn its attentions elsewhere to put bread on the table. After briefly flirting with the manufacturer of agricultural machinery and even office furniture, they began building motorcycles. At that time, the chief designer was a man named Max Friz, who was responsible for the famous Boxer engines, the first of which was based on a British Douglas design.

In 1923, the R32 was born, which was to become the basis of future Boxer powered BMW’s. This motorcycle used the shaft drive system which would feature in all BMW motorcycles up until 1994.

BMW motorcycles were to prove invaluable in North Africa during World War 2. Not having a chain that could clog with sand, they were so successful that Harley-Davidson were requested by the US military, to copy the machine, which they duly did and produced the Harley-Davidson XA. With the German war machine insatiable for motorcycles, the company flourished during the war years, but as Germany’s fortunes declined, so did BMW’s. Its Munich factory was razed to the ground by bombing and after the war the Russians dismantled the Eisenach plant and re-assembled it in Irbit. Not only that, but the cream of their engineers were taken to Russia or the USA to work on jet engines research.

As the restriction on motorcycle production was eased, BMW had to go back to basics. None of the old plans had survived, so the engineers were forced to use pre-war motorcycles as a template for their new machines. The bike that came off the production line was the R24, which incidentally had no rear suspension. In 1949 over 9,000 R24’s were built, a figure which rose to more than 17,000 by 1950. The R68, a sports motorcycle was introduced in 1952. This 594cc machine was to become something of a collector’s piece, as less than 1,500 were produced.

The 1950’s saw a downturn in motorcycle demand. This period saw a reduction in output from 30,000 units to less than 6,000 by 1957. By the late 50’s the vast majority of BMW motorcycles were being exported to the USA, Butler and Smith inc. having the sole distribution rights, but although American sales were strong, the company was struggling to survive. With the financial help of Herbert Quandt and the blossoming automobile division, BMW pulled through, and in 1959, cementing it’s American reputation, John Prenton rode a BMW R69 from New York to Los Angeles in 53 hours and 11 minutes, and in doing so, shaved over 22 hours off the existing record.

The R27, the last of the single cylinder models was introduced in 1967. Times were changing and the public demanded different machines, and so BMW’s were built, not with Sidecars in mind, but sporty performance. In 1970 the company introduced an entirely re-vamped range of motorcycles; the R50/5, the R60/5 and the R75/5. In 1974 the 500cc model was removed from the catalogue and replaced with a 900cc bike. In 1975 the R90S was introduced and soon earned the tag of the best ‘Supersports’ motorcycle of its day.

1977 saw the arrival of the first one litre engined motorcycles from BMW. This year also welcomed the first ‘Full Fairing’ to a BMW machine. In 1978 the R100T was thrown into the ring to compete with Honda’s Goldwing.

1986 brought the world’s first electrically adjusted windscreen on the K100LT, which at first seemed a little eccentric, but is now used on various BMW models and has in fact been copied by Honda, Yamaha and Kawasaki.

It was BMW who in 1988 introduced ABS to the motorcycle world when it became standard on all their K models, the R1100S acquiring it in 1993. It is now fitted to almost all the company’s shaft driven bikes.

Despite the near demise of the company after World War 2

, the company has risen to be unquestionably one of the finest motorcycle manufacturers in the world.

The distributor and rotor will degrade over time and get cracks in their plastic casings. Moisture seeps in through these cracks and corrodes the metal inside which leads to misfiring. Replace as recommended by your manual or more often if they appear worn. Modern spark plug cables are nearly maintenance free but should still be occasionally tested for proper resistance.

Replace Your Filters

The manual probably says replace every 30,000 miles but many mechanics recommend replacing yearly or if you have any problems such as stalling or loss of power.

Finally, the air filter and PCV breather filter make sure that only clean air gets into your engine. Without a steady supply of air, your engine suffocates and combustion is poor. It’s not enough to simply blow out the contaminants. Tiny particles embed in the filter and can’t be removed.
